"Rivals" is destined to go down as one of the definitive accounts of Lincoln's life, and any reader with even the most fleeting interesting in the 16th president would do well to delve into it.

I wish, however, that I had bought the hard copy. Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton.

Goodwin's intent here, it's pretty clear, is to focus on the latter of these attributes. Doris Kearns Goodwin’s classic life of Lyndon Johnson, who presided over the Great Society, the Vietnam War, and other defining moments the tumultuous 1960s, is a monument in political biography. Instead of presenting the evidence questioning the author’s point of view and refuting it, such incidents are just left out.

Would you consider the audio edition of Team of Rivals to be better than the print version? Narrator: Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Honestly, I would give this book ten stars.

This is a great book, beautifully researched and written.

That Lincoln succeeded was the result of a character that had been forged by life experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. This riveting and superbly-told tale of Lincoln's life and political career not only held my interest: it kept me up nights, pinned me at home on beautiful weekend afternoons, and had me turning down invitations for lunch so that I could bolt down my food while reading. It then takes us through his adolescence and his marriage to Mary, and his astute jockeying for the Republican nomination over more celebrated and well-heeled rivals. I loved learning that Lincoln was an irrepressible storyteller, constantly illustrating his points with down to earth stories, and Goodwin persuasively conveys his honesty, integrity, and personal charm.

There are so many lessons here that I wish modern politicians would embrace: do the right thing for the right reasons, no matter how unpopular; always allow your political opponents to save face; invite - don't avoid (or worse, squash)- dissenting opinions; compromise always trumps conflict; and, above all, always put the good of the nation above your own personal ambitions. He was willing to give nearly anyone the benefit of the doubt in a given situation.

That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. In the second part, without grudge and with magnanimous pragmatism, he enlists the services of these same rivals to help him first to the Presidency and then through the long and bitter years of the Civil War.

I was surprised by how beautifully told this story is. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 16, 2015. While normally I'm not a big fan of political histories, the storytelling ability of Doris Kearns Goodwin is so successful that I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book.

As a member of his White House staff, she soon became his personal confidante, and in the years before his death he revealed himself to her as he did to no other.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? Goodwin's portrayal of the rivals also is compelling - especially Salmon Chase, chock full of his belief in his wonderfulness and his predestination to be president, who instead became Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Seward, a beloved politician who was expected to carry the nomination easily and instead bitterly lost to Lincoln.

Her story begins in graduate school: through a series of chance encounters, young Deborah was introduced to Marwan Kanafani, a dashing former soccer star turned high-ranking Palestinian diplomat who was working at the United Nations. Stephen Thorne, By:

Excellent reading.

I consider myself fortunate for having read this story. The book starts a bit slow, but by the time you reach the Chicago convention you're immersed in the lives of these men, and by the end you can often guess how each man (Chase, in particular) will react.

When you think of Lincoln, you think of the Lincoln-Douglass debates, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and his tragic assassination.

This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

I have read several books on the civil war but really wanted more history of the events that lead up to the war, and of Lincoln's life and career. By the end of the decade, she would bear witness to the making of international history.

Doris Kearns Goodwin deserves thanks from her readers twice over. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

A political dynamo with movie-star charm, Marwan swept Deborah off her feet and into a marriage that kept her in the company of diplomats, dignitaries, world leaders, international glamour and intrigue.

David McCullough, By: On the verge of adolescence, Dave is rescued from his terrifyingly abusive, alcoholic mother and made a permanent ward of the court. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats. But they became his supporters.
